Thank you for telling The Leader’s story. Good on the Hemmestad’s!

Thanks for sharing this story. Local newspapers are critical in so many ways.

Your story makes me want to start our own local newspaper. We supposedly have the Nevada Journal but it is no longer about Nevada. We need local news!

Yes. You and many others that I could name don’t have the local news you want—and need! It is an uphill fight, with the current trends.

Great story. I find the obituary section one of the most informative sections in our paper. The stories of people’s lives is very revealing of the rural culture. Lately I have read several that were written in the first person. Interesting twist on a very old style of writing.

Oh, that is interesting! I haven’t seen this. I’d like to talk to you more about it.

Thanks for this great story. The Iowa legislation seeking to eliminate local public notices is just ridiculous and callous.

I have recently been reading archives of The Malvern (Iowa) Leader from the early 1900’s. Amazing to note how much national and international news was included in those days….with some wonderful writing on all local stories.

I have some old newspapers that should be archived. It is interesting to see how newspaper styles and coverage have evolved over the years. Coverage definitely is suffering today. Thanks!

And how can small newspapers compete with social media? Seems very few of our neighbors get their school news or town/county news from the papers any more. Even the radio stations are lagging behind the whirlwinds of Facebook, Instagram, etc.
