Each December, as the New Year approaches, I ask myself the same question: "Have we told our children the stories?" Oh, not the bedtime stories we read to them after their baths: Are You My Mother?, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, East o' the Sun & West o' the Moon, The Poky Little Puppy, Miss Rumphius, The Polar Express –
Delightful stories! I have been writing my adult child a letter at Christmas for twenty years or so, sharing family history. I agree we need to pass these stories down.
This is all so wonderful. What a treasure trove of history! I love that you have made a tradition of telling sharing it with the new generation your family. May they do the same. It's so important. Too bad most of us don't. It's never too late. Thank you for sharing these stories with us and providing a kick-in-the-pants inspiration to tell our own.
I love this, too. I thought about writing each of the kids a Christmas letter but got too busy and didn’t do it. No time like the present, so I might do it anyway. You’ve inspired me.
My mother left a few written stories; my father was a notorious non writer but a good oral historian. As I read this, my memories of what they told me came back. All these stories need to be written and passed on. Perhaps a society with no written language is luckier; the stories were/are passed down over the long winter nights. Thank you once again for reminding me of the power of story in our lives.
Thank you, Diana. You're right. I am grateful beyond words that some of my family's stories have been put to paper. But I know it's up to me to carry through with stories from my generation. Thanks again!
