The statistic of 11,000 liters water to produce 1 liter of biodiesel is astonishing....at least considering the 3 to 1 ratio water to ethanol. I wonder why the processing of soy requires so much more water?
Thanks for this piece! Here in South Dakota most of the pipeline opposition has centered on eminent domain issues. But, this state has historically been concerned about water use and shortages. I plan to share your post with pipeline opponents over here in SD. And, the water consumption associated with digital activities seems to be largely under the radar everywhere!
Thanks so much, George! I appreciate your input from the South Dakota perspective. These intersecting issues--eminent domain, shrinking water supplies, and the use of public water for private use--all deserve public scrutiny!
Such an important issue! Thank you! I guess we need water usage intensity ratings for all our activities. It’s amazing that we know so little about our aquifers. So much we take for granted....
Thanks for this article. The public needs to hear about the water issue more than they are right now.
You're welcome, Andrea!

Yes, I was surprised by that, too. I am not totally sure, but I believe it is more of a chemical process.
Excellent piece!
Thanks, Charlie! I appreciate your encouragement.

Thanks, Josiah! Yes, I was amazed to see how much I contribute to the water supplies needed to cool down the server "farms" in our midst.
Yes , the location for Google, Bunge, and SIRE facilities next to both the MO River and the Mid-American Energy plant at Council Bluffs is telling….
