On this Earth Day, Monday, April 22, you won't find me planting trees in neglected areas of Waterloo, or picking up trash along a walking trail in Boone.
What an insightful substack Cheryl! Thank you. Your research into the pros and cons of green tech and energy reveals the good and the bad and the need to question “clean energy” innovations. It is my hope that Iowans who believe corn, hogs and chicken factories are the future of Iowa will wake up to the consequences of industrialized agri business. Iowans are sacrificing our health for king corn.
Thank you, Denise! I'm so glad to know you find it helpful and informative. As I considered the column, it just seemed that it would be good to explore a few of the many shades of grey in our green perspective. Of course, the list far exceeds the word count of this column! Thanks again, Denise, as you point out, there's much work to do!
Thanks for the Earth Day piece, Cheryl! Of course Earth Day should be every day. But of course our 2024 legislature and governor didn't even allocate a nano-second to protecting the environment.
Quick correction. The bottle Bill was enacted before 1979 and I participated in a Des Moines Sierra Club roadside cleanup in 1978 to celebrate the Bottle Bill enactment
Branstad had nothing to do with it, did he vote for it as a state representative? . He wasn’t governor until 1983. And only elected Lt Gov in 78 election
Progressive Progress is not being sustained. I’m tired of living and fighting
Great column! As you explained, many of these issues are complex. As a result, candidates for office convert them to simple sound bites that are easy to comprehend - but often wrong.
Hi, John. Thanks so much! There are so many trade-offs, and ill-advised incentives, and as you point out, greenwashing marketing claims. But somewhere in the midst of these competing needs and goals, we need to achieve balance. Thanks again!
Thanks for this reminder that we always have to continue learning.

100%, Larry!
Thank you for such a thoughtful article! The devil is always in the details......
You're so welcome. Yes, that's a great way to describe it!
