Thanks, Dave. I needed my daughter to remind me of it! But it certainly is worthy of an encore in Iowa today. Yes, one would wonder if the governor ever saw the movie, or has blocked that scene from her memory?

Thanks, Josiah! It's hard to manage that viral phenomenon, isn't it? Facebook doesn't like to promote anything that takes eyeballs away from its site. But I did see a post of my column on the Boone County Democrats discussion group.

Josiah, you are so right to question their literacy. It is so embarrassing to face the prospects of Iowa's first in the nation Republican caucus giving this insurrectionist the go-ahead, leading the rest of the country to assume we're all just a bunch of pinheads, as you say.

I remember the movie scene quite well. Cheryl, you’ve hit a “home run” with this column. I wonder if the governor has ever actually seen the movie?

Brilliant column, Cheryl.

This column is so vital….a complete indictment of the mindlessness surrounding us. It deserves to go viral somehow.

Thank you for this. And I wonder if the legislators and Governor have read any of the classics they are banning. The whole deal portrays Iowans as pinheads, just as voting for an insurrectionist as Republican nominee will......

Thanks Cheryl, what an incredible column. It certainly gives us much to think about.

Is it my understanding that if one parent feels a library book and/or a book in a teacher's classroom library is inappropriate and for whatever reason, that it can be pulled from the shelf so that no one reads it? Is this what the law states? If that is accurate, will any book exist in our libraries/classroom collections?

Sexually explicit material is not appropriate. I cannot argue that. However as a former teacher, I was very selective of the books I had in my classroom. I pretty much knew the content. If there was content that made me feel uncomfortable, it certainly was not on my classroom shelf.

Hello. Thanks for your comments and question. I believe that the rules still are being written to implement the law. Many schools went ahead and removed books as best as they could determine. Although a judge has blocked the law from going into effect, now that the legislators are back in session, they are continuing to work on the rules. Stay tuned! (Thanks for your years of service in the classroom!)

Exceptional column summarizing all the faults of the book banning that has occurred in Iowa, making our history of a state that highly prizes education and literature look like we had dropped back to the 1950's and had no word in the literature provided our children, nor the education of them thanks to the current governor and legislature. Field of Dreams is one of my 2 favorite movies & I needed a reminder of the book banning scene. I think it is time to watch it again!
