Education, not even holding steady, going backwards! I think of all the many devoted Iowa teachers in all sizes of public schools, underpaid and under appreciated.

Cheryl, your analysis is spot on. I’m concerned about the block grants “with no strings attached.” Sounds like a money grab to help fund the private school subsidies.

Great column! One statement stands out: "Trump lacks the authority to shutter a department created by Congress." So true. But he has neutered Congress and they don't seem to realize it. This is getting more and more frightening by the hour.

Thank you! YES! If our Iowa Congressmen, and others from rural states like Iowa, won't stand up for our schools, they are even less responsive than we might have imagined. Total lack of concern for their constituents!

Yes, great-great grandfather. Woodbury County was basically unsettled at that time by white people. Of course, the Sioux traveled about and hunted there from time to time (hence, West Fork of the Little Sioux River).
