Excellent, well-written article. I truly don't understand how Iowa has gotten so far off track. Sad, sad, sad!!

Great column. I am puzzled by the apparent lack of concern in rural Iowa.

Spot on, Cheryl. This latest plan is ten times worse than the previous iterations. It’s expensive and wrong.

Very well written Cheryl. I hear the passion in your words and the frustration. I write a column for my local newspaper and stated a similar argument. Iowans voted for a very un-Iowan legislature and governor.

Thank you. How will public education ever recover?

I am totally against Gov Reynolds whole plan. The parents are already having to provide things for their school children that the schools used to be able to provide. And teachers are paying out of their own pocket for materials. What will happen when they take even MORE money away from the public school system. I consider myself a "church" person but I agree, as mentioned, that with separation of church and state, how in the world can you take public money to give to private church-based schools? I am afraid the public education system in Iowa at least if not a great deal of the United States is going down the drain. What will happen when the future of our country is in the hands of individuals who have not had a solid educational foundation?

Hi Cheryl. Thank you. Earlier today, I offered the following. I also commented at last weeks hearing.

Reynolds is not vouching for rural Iowa, when she excludes over 1/2 of all Iowans. Reynolds is forsaking students with disabilities and students of color and LGBT.

Parental choice is not true. Not all parents get to choose. Parents with children of color or are LGBT or disabled will not have a choice unless amendments are enacted.

We ask for amendments requiring private schools to follow current civil rights law on non-discrimination and on accommodations on mental and physical disabilities.. And amendments on race, LGBT, ethnic non -discrimination.

Parental choice is a falsehood. Without pre-K or after school programs, Iowa families, esp rural, working families, will be unable to send children to private schools. as we know, Iowa historically has high % of working parents. **We need amendments requiring private schools to provide pre-K and after school programs.
