Done! This is a really, really good (and scary) article.

Cheryl Tevis's avatar

Thank you, Marcy! I hope that I'm not being too alarmist, but I think we have to be skeptical of claims, and think through our priorities as a community, and as a state.

You're welcome, Dave! We all need to stay tuned, don't we?

Excellent coverage. Shameful that our Governor and legislature have ignored groundwater mapping for so many decades….Thank you!!

Cheryl Tevis's avatar

Thank you! I know that water quality gets a lot of coverage – and it should! But water quantity is a huge issue as well. We also need to advocate for doing a better job of monitoring our supplies.

Josiah Wearin's avatar

NE is ahead in groundwater monitoring, but perhaps all the visible irrigation is the reason. Data centers and power plants are perhaps less apt to cause concern?

Cheryl Tevis's avatar

Yes, I do believe the irrigation wells are a factor in Nebraska being so far out front with this. Thanks!

So very glad you are covering this important bundle of issues. We lack foresight as a State and Nation and World and seem to be in an incredible hurry to take off for another planet and leave this one in shambles. It wouldn't be so bad, but other countries seem to think the USA and China have answers when they are just determined to move faster with blinders on.

Thank you, Josiah! I am trying, and appreciate help from readers like you!

You do good work for us all Cheryl. Without water ….

Cheryl Tevis's avatar

Thanks, Sarah! Yes, water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink!

Thank you, Tim! I appreciate such high praise; I'll keep trying to deserve it!

Thank you, John! That means a lot to me!

Great reporting and writing, as always, Cheryl. I recently read an article about underwater (yeah, I know) data centers. It solves the stealing-water-from-aquifers problem for cooling and for generating electricity. Apparently China is doing this or getting ready to. Something to keep an eye on as that develops. Also, one teeny, tiny correction: It's Ocheyedan (with an "a" at the end).

Cheryl Tevis's avatar

Thanks, Joan! I saw a reference to the potential of locating data centers underwater as well, so it will be something else to explore in the future. Ouch, Ocheyedan! I looked it up a couple times, but did not see this error. Thanks for letting me know!!
